This is a wonderful 1928 Underwood portable typewriter in good working order for it's age. Underwood was based in New York and made a wide variety of typewriters up until the early 1960's when Underwood was taken over by Olivetti. The standard 4 bank model began production in 1926 and ran to the mid 40's.
It's is in a lovely overall condition with a shiny black enamel paintwork finish with just a few minor marks to the metal body, mainly at the front edge which has been touched up and at the back. This one has the slightly larger " Pica " sized type face giving you 10 letters to the inch. Please note that some colour from the vintage map behind in the images may be reflecting on the enamel paintwork.
It has 4 banks of glass topped keys and these are in an off white with silver chrome rim and black coloured letters and numbers, which are all in a very nice condition with just some slight discolouration to a few. The metal chrome work is also in a good condition. There is the Underwood name and logo in gold above the carriage, on the front edge as well as the manufacturers and patent details on the back of the typewriter. The typewriter types well for its age and we have given it a clean, professional service, adjusted and tested it and fitted a new top quality American made ribbon so its all ready for you to start typing on.
New Group 9 ribbons can be obtained from us from $13.90 including postage. You would then either drop the plastic Group 9 spools into the machine or you could rewind the new ribbon onto the existing metal spools.
The size of the typewriter is 27 cm wide by 27 cm deep and is 12 cm high and so is a nice portable size. It comes with its original case which is also in a good condition for its age. The leather handle and latch to close both work well. There are some marks and discolouration to the case in places. You can leave the typewriter on it's baseboard or take it off by undoing the 2 screws located at each side just at the inside edge of where the key are situated.
This is a fabulous and very collectable late 1920's working typewriter in a nice overall condition and with a service and new ribbon is all ready to start typing on again .Please note that if you are wanting to do extensive and precision typing then a model as old as this one may not be the best option. If however you are wanting something classic and decorative with glass topped keys that will also allow you to write letters or do small typing projects then this is a very nice option.
It also comes with a photocopy of an original instruction booklet for Underwood Universal Portables which will provide valuable help for changing the ribbon.
