If you have an old typewriter and you want to test that all the keys work did you know that the quickest way to test it is to type the pangram " The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog " as this uses all the letters of the alphabet . The phrase first appeared in 1885 and was used as in writing exercises . It is commonly  used now to display font styles .
